About India

Indian girl

India is one of the world's fastest growing economies and is a fascinating sub-continent, rich in history, culture and spirituality. Set apart from the rest of Asia by the Himalayas (the highest mountains on earth) India has a population of one billion and a huge diversity to its landscape which spans 3.28 million sq metres and comprises 28 different states.

India became independent from Britain in 1947 after a long struggle led by peaceful protester, Mahatma Gandhi and in the same year Pakistan and India were separated into two countries.  Many Europeans, including the Dutch, Portuguese and French, have staked their claim on the land at different points in history and left behind plenty of sacred sites and ancient ruins in abandoned cities.

India is renowned for cricketing expertise, Bollywood films, spicy curries and tea.  Delhi is the capital of India and is fast-paced, polluted and densely populated, but an exhilarating and captivating place to visit.  As well as being a culturally rich city Delhi is the political and administrative centre of India and is split into two parts; Old Delhi and New Delhi, which is the former British capital.  Delhi sits on the banks of the Yamuna River and is a mixture of old and new so visitors could one moment be admiring an example of ancient Mughal archaeology the next be dining in a swanky, modern restaurant.

With a plethora of sights and sounds to tantalise the tourist there is no wonder that India is one of the world's most popular holiday destinations.  Some of the most celebrated destinations include the Taj Mahal in Agra, and Jaipur and Rajasthan for an insight into India's cultural and palatial heritage, Kerala for a relaxing backwater canal boat tour, Goa for beautiful sandy beaches, Delhi and Mumbai for their fascinating and bustling appeal and Hampi in Karnataka as an ancient world heritage site.

In recent years, due to a flourishing private health sector, India has become a global health destination.  Its burgeoning medical tourism sector is said to be growing by around 30 per cent each year and medical tourism hotspots have cropped up in major cities like Bangalore, New Delhi, Kolkata (Calcutta), Ludhiana, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Reports suggest that by 2010 the number of people travelling to India for private healthcare will reach half a million.  Medical tourists are choosing India for orthopaedic operations and cardiac surgery, as well as competitively priced cosmetic surgery, dentistry and infertility treatment which they are combining with an unforgettable holiday in this stimulating and exotic sub-continent.
