Why opt for cardiac surgery and treatment in India?
From the snow-capped Himalayas in the north to the sun drenched coastal villages of the south, India unfolds like an ancient tapestry. At times threadbare and fading, the land stretches from desert dunes and scattered slums to the rich embroidery of ancient, jewelled palaces, and the majestic domes of forgotten empires. Since the first civilisations rose on the banks of the Indus River almost 5,000 years ago, India has given birth to Buddhism and Hinduism, been touched by the Empire of Alexander the Great, seen the ancient empires of the Mauryas and Guptas rise and fall, and has traded with Pharaohs and Caesars.
India is a feast for the senses; where the air is heavy with the scent of jasmine and dancers trail frenetic melodies in colourful silk saris. Its cooks compose dishes from a palette of exotic spices that may leave a lingering taste of saffron or aniseed. In India's cities you will be overwhelmed by a myriad of textures, colours, and movements all jostling for your attention.
Cardiac surgery in India
By travelling to India you will benefit from:
1. Access to high quality medical care at lower costs,
2. Immediate availability of procedures without long waitlists, and
3. Innovative treatments that may not be available where you live
As with many other goods and services, the global marketplace has given rise to competition in cardiothoracic surgery. Within the healthcare world the result has been the creation of three distinct benefits for consumers when traveling internationally for medical services: a rise in higher quality care, an opportunity for dramatic cost savings, and a level of superior service and patient experience.
Heart surgery procedures offered in India
BridgeHealth’s World-Class Provider Network™ offers the following cardiothoracic procedures. If you do not see your particular need listed here, please contact a Travel Care Coordinator to discuss further options.
CABG (“Cabbage”)
CABG stands for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft. The surgeon reroutes, or "bypasses," blood around the clogged arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen to the heart. Synthetic GORE-TEX® grafts or the large saphenous vein in the leg are used to reroute the blood flow. A patient may undergo one, two, three, or more bypass grafts during one surgery, depending on how many coronary arteries are blocked. This is the most common type of heart surgery performed on adults to reduce the risk of heart attack.
Coronary Angioplasty
Also referred to as Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), coronary angioplasty is a surgical procedure used to open clogged heart arteries that do not have enough blockage to warrant a graft. With PCI, devices such as stents or balloons can be used to mechanically widen the lumen of the blood vessel so blood can flow more freely.
Heart Valve Repair/Replacement
The majority of heart valve operations involve repair or replacement of mitral or aortic valves. Heart valve repair and replacement can remedy valve damage and prolong life. The success rate for heart valve surgery is high and increasing.
Surgical Aneurysm Repair
This procedure is usually performed to manage an aneurysm that has not yet ruptured or blocked an artery. This is called an elective or early repair. The affected artery is replaced with a tube-like blood vessel graft made of GORE-TEX® or another synthetic material that is the same size and shape of a healthy artery.
Medical aftercare
Follow-up and a commitment to a healthy lifestyle are the important responsibilities of the cardiothoracic surgery patient. Many patients report that their quality of life is immensely improved after cardiothoracic surgery. They are able to exercise and participate in social events that would have been impossible without the surgery.
Some follow-up care may be necessary once you return home. BridgeHealth has over 80 offices in all states that are available to their clients for both pre and post-operative care. They can help arrange a wide variety of aftercare needs including post-procedure checkups, prescription services, and even higher levels of care if necessary. Your Travel Care Coordinator will review your aftercare concerns, discuss your options with you, and arrange care if necessary.
