The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Foreign and Commonwealth office are useful websites to consult for information about safety and suggested vaccinations for your travel to India. Since most vaccines don't work until approximately two weeks after receiving them you should go to see your GP (or visit a specialist travel clinic) to enquire about necessary vaccinations at least a month before travel.
Typhoid is recommended for all visitors to India, even if your intention is to frequent smart urban areas. Diphtheria and tetanus, Hepatitis A / B and Polio are also recommended by WHO and you will need to discuss the risk of malaria in your chosen destination and the requirement of anti-malarial medication.
Below is an extensive list of vaccinations for travel to India. Explain to your GP or travel health representative where you are going and what activities you are likely to be doing. You may have already had some of these vaccinations from previous trips, so ask your GP which boosters are required and request an International Certificate of Vaccination (a small yellow booklet) to take with you so as to avoid any doubt when you're in India, and for future reference.
