Travel considerations: How soon can you return

The duration of the stay will vary from person to person and of course on what treatment or surgery is being undertaken.  It is quite likely that your doctor will ask you to stay for a short while afterwards to perform observations and follow-ups.

Every surgical procedure carries with it risks for complications like bleeding or infection and the risk of blood clots may be higher due to travel and the associated dehydration.  Remember, however, that the complications which could occur in India are often the same ones which could occur in hospitals in the UK and are often about miscommunication, omitting to inform the doctor/surgeon of any allergies, or leaving out important information about your health history so remember to inform your doctor/surgeon of everything which is relevant.

Post-operative problems and complications may also occur when patients take post-op care into their own hands so it is extremely important to follow the instructions of your treating doctors.  If you are going alone many providers/hospitals provide experienced representatives to look after you and they can be there for you while you deal with the medical team, have tests, treatment or surgery, as well as afterwards during the recovery process.  If you feel you need it, you can also arrange for nursing services at your hotel once you have left the hospital and if you are travelling with a friend/partner the hospital will recommend a hotel or guesthouse nearby for them.

When you are discharged you will be given copies of your medical documents and reports containing the observations, prescriptions etc, which you can give to any other doctor while in India and a copy to your GP when you get back so he/she is up to speed with your health.  It is important to let you GP know about what you are having done in India so that he/she can update your records accordingly.
