Checking out the surgeon or dentist

India has some top class surgeons but it is essential to know what qualifications and accreditations the surgeons, dentists and doctors should have in order to practice, and then to clarify that the professionals you will be seeing have these in place.  You might find that some surgeons or dentists in India have studied and qualified in the UK and if that is the case then practicing doctors will be listed on the General Medical Council’s (GMC) register.

Cosmetic surgeons will be members of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and cosmetic dentists will be listed on the General Dental Council’s (GDC) register and accredited by the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD).

All physicians or surgeons need to have completed the MBBS course at a recognised medical college.  To practice in India doctors must be registered and certified by the Indian Medical Council which is the equivalent of the UK’s General Medical Council and surgeons registered with the Association of Surgeons of India

The Indian Medical Association looks after the interests of doctors as well as the community in which they practice, the Indian Health Care Federation (IHCF) is an independent non-statutory body which liaises between government, health providers, medical equipment manufacturers and other medical institutions.  IHCF has a membership of around 300 members from across India and is affiliated to the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Dentists tend to be trained to dental surgeon status and thus qualified to undertake all aspects of dentistry, the professional association for dentists is the Indian Dental Association.

Some surgeons may also have international memberships with organisations such as the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) or, if trained in the US, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

You will generally meet your doctor or surgeon upon arrival in India, but some companies offer teleconferencing facilities so you can ask questions beforehand.  Following are some suggested questions for the doctor/ surgeon:

  • Where did they study, train and what qualifications/accreditations do they hold?

  • What is their experience of this type of procedure?

  • Do they have international experience, and do they belong to international associations for their specialities?  If so, which ones?

  • How many operations/procedures do they carry out each year?

  • Where else do they operate?

  • What is their success rate for the operation?

  • Have the surgeon and anesthesiologist worked together before?  (This is important as they build up a relationship and can better monitor the patient’s needs);

  • What type of anesthetic will be used?   Are there any risks with this type of anesthesia?

  • Will the anesthesiologist perform a pre-operative evaluation?  And a post-operative evaluation?

  • Will the anesthesiologist take into account the patient’s wishes (provided it is safe to do so);
