India is a key player in the area of medical tourism, and there is a strong need for accredited hospitals to ensure best practice and safety for international patients. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is the governmental body which looks after quality control in the hospitals and clinics, and the government is establishing minimum quality standards to reassure patients seeking treatment abroad.
Many hospitals in India apply for and have been granted the ISO 9001 accreditation - this is a voluntary standardisation run by a non-governmental body in which hospitals must pass rigorous tests to be certified. Look out for this accreditation when booking your trip to India, as well as the Joint Commission International USA, which is the Gold Standard accreditation for US and European hospitals and represents provision of the highest levels of patient care and patient safety.
If you are dealing directly with a hospital in India then it is advisable to follow the procedure that providers take when partnering with hospitals and check that a hospital ticks the boxes in terms of quality, safety and expertise. Find out about the hospital's reputation, and depending on what procedure you are planning, whether it has expertise in this. Check its accreditation status, looking for ISO 9001, or the Joint Commission International standard and ask what clinical data they have. Check the surgeon's qualifications and accreditation and ask how many nurses they have to deal with how many patients (nurse to patient ratio). Asking them these questions will also determine the level of their customer service ability.
The geographic location of the hospital will probably be important to you depending on the holiday plans you have for pre or post treatment and if you are travelling with a companion you will want to ensure there is suitable accommodation for them nearby. Ultimately, you will want to go to a hospital which is well versed in dealing with international patients which has international standards in addition to world-class medical infrastructure and equipment.
