India has also long been associated with spirituality, philosophy and health and the ancient, natural, holistic healing system of Ayurveda evolved in India around 600 BC. Ayur means 'life' and veda means 'the science of knowledge' and although it is often described as an 'alternative' type of therapy Ayurveda is more of a medical system, which aims to bring and maintain good health and harmony to the mind and the body.
Working on the premise that all disease arises out of internal imbalances, Ayurveda treats the individual as a whole and is a natural way to health, working on prevention as well as cure. According to Ayurveda both the mind and body need to be treated in order to enjoy good health and the basis of treatment involves balancing the body's individual 'doshas'.
The doshas relate to a person's body shape as well as personality traits and regulate and guide the structures and substances of the body. There are three doshas; Vata, Pitta and Kapha, and all three doshas in balance equals good health.
Ayurvedic medicines are made mostly from herbs and minerals and Ayurvedic centres, colleges and resorts abound in India - especially in the southern state of Kerala where it originated. Many resorts specialise in 'Panchakarma', a holistic programme to restore a person's health using five therapeutic means to eliminate toxins to purify the whole body and restore balance of the Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas. The programme typically lasts between ten to 21 days, but can be followed for even longer, depending on the individual's needs.
If time is of the essence you can still enjoy individual Ayurvedic massages in most hotels in almost every city in India - provided of course that your doctor or surgeon agrees to it. Some of the most popular treatments include 'Sirodhara' where treatment warm oils are poured onto the forehead to promote relaxation and 'Abhyangam', an all over body massage which is recommended for obesity and diabetes and is often combined with Kizhi herbal balls which are patted over rheumatic pain, osteoarthritis, swelling etc.
Initially, patients will see an Ayurvedic doctor for a consultation and diagnosis to achieve the right balance and regain immunity and good health. As with all doctors or medical consultations in India, it is important to verify their qualifications and clinic's accreditation.
