Accreditation of doctors and surgeons

India doctor meeting

In India medical tourists can access high quality medical care at much lower prices than in the UK, as well as avoid long waiting times for surgery, and possibly even obtain procedures not available in the UK.  However, as with all treatments, it is vital to clarify the qualifications, training, and accreditation of the surgeons before committing to treatment and advisable to read testimonials or talk to some previous patients before making your decision.

The basic or degree level qualification for a medical professional is a MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) which involves studying for five and a half years, including a one year internship.  After MBBS candidates can go for post graduate level studies (MD or MS) to specialise in Medicine and Surgery and post graduate programs (MD or MS) usually last three years.

Post Graduates (with MD or MS or MSc in Medicine) can further opt for super-specialisation, meaning that they can go for PhD in any specialised area of medicine.  MD or MS holders can complete the Doctoral Programme (PhD) in two years and MSc Medicine holders in three years.  All doctors and surgeons need to have completed the MBBS course at a recognised medical college.

In order to practice doctors must be registered and certified by the Indian Medical Council - the equivalent of the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) and surgeons must be registered with the Association of Surgeons of India.  Hospitals can apply for voluntary accreditation with the Medical Council of India or the National Board of Examinations for teaching purposes.  The Indian Medical Association looks after the interests of doctors as well as the community in which they practice.

When choosing a doctor or surgeon in India, look for one who is affiliated to a hospital or clinic which is JCI Accredited (The Joint Commission International USA is the Gold Standard accreditation for US and European hospitals and represents provision of the highest levels of patient care and patient safety) and/or ISO 9001:2000 certified (the voluntary standardisation run by a non governmental body where hospitals must pass rigorous tests to be certified).  The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is responsible for quality control in India's hospitals/clinics and the Indian Health Care Federation (IHCF) is an independent non-statutory body which liaises between government, health providers, medical equipment manufacturers and other medical institutions.
