Accreditation of Cosmetic surgeons

Dental Professional, Romania, Dentist

In India, medical tourists can take advantage of state-of-the-art plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery in world-class facilities - but it is essential that the qualifications, training, and accreditation of the surgeon are verified before committing to treatment.  Ask to see patient testimonials and before/after pictures before making a decision.

In India surgeons need to have completed an MBBS course at a recognised medical college and to practice they must be registered and certified by the Indian Medical Council (the equivalent of the UK’s General Medical Council).  Cosmetic surgeons should be registered with the Association of Surgeons of India.

You will probably find that many surgeons in India have trained in the US or UK in addition to medical schools in India and they may also have international memberships with organisations such as the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) or, if trained in the US, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

If the cosmetic surgeon was trained in the UK, he/she may be a member of The British Association of Plastic, Resonstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), the professional representative body for plastic and reconstructive surgeons and/or The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).  Surgeons performing cosmetic surgery in the UK are trained as plastic surgeons, and only surgeons whose training is recognised by inclusion on the General Medical Council’s (GMC) Specialist Register of plastic surgery may actually call themselves Plastic Surgeons so it is important to verify the qualifications and training of the surgeon you are considering having treatment with.

When choosing a cosmetic surgeon in India, look for one who is affiliated to a clinic which is JCI Accredited (The Joint Commission International USA is the Gold Standard accreditation for US and European hospitals and represents provision of the highest levels of patient care and patient safety) and/or ISO 9001:2000 certified (the voluntary standardisation run by a non governmental body where hospitals must pass rigorous tests to be certified).  The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is responsible for quality control in India's hospitals/clinics and the Indian Health Care Federation (IHCF) is an independent non-statutory body which liaises between government, health providers, medical equipment manufacturers and other medical institutions.
